A Thank-You to Faculty

21 Apr Posted by in Business | Comments Off on A Thank-You to Faculty

We’re nearing the end of the peak admissions season, and while final data are not in our situation seems fairly robust, which is encouraging in any circumstance but particularly amid current economic uncertainties. Lots of contributions produce these positive results, including the efforts of the Admissions office, lots of deans and associate deans, members of my senior staff, and this year even the weather, which cooperated for our big Sunday event for potential undergraduates. (I would credit our stellar climate group, but they maintain they don’t do weather.) But a key factor involves faculty participation, in showing up for the main admissions showcases, where they can meet students and their parents, in contacting students individually, and overall in creating an unusually congenial academic atmosphere. Our admissions leaders note that this kind of faculty involvement is rare. Parents and applicants comment regularly on what a positive impression they gain as a result of faculty presence.

And so we hear comments about how a son or daughter was trying to decide between Mason and Hopkins, or Carnegie Mellon (where’s that?), or UVa, and how their perceptions of Mason were so much more positive. And so we seem to be in the process of admitting our largest Honors group ever. Of course we will watch the numbers carefully, and of course we lose competitions for students. But, thanks to impressive faculty engagement, we very much put our best foot forward.
